Farming the microbiome for nutrition
Indians, in general, are thought to have monotonous and predominantly cereal-based vegetarian diets with very little animal-food intake. As a consequence, their intake of micronutrients, particularly the B vitamins, is low. It is possible that there is an additional and physiologically significant source of some micronutrients for homeostasis in humans, coming from de novo colonic microbial synthesis of these nutrients $in vivo$. If so, this could be relevant to adapting to marginal diets with predominantly cereal intakes in human nutriture.
